If one were to build a ladder into space, past the gravitational field of the earth, could you theoretically climb the ladder to escape the earth's gravity, without having to achieve escape velocity?

What would happen if an earthquake occurred and generated a major tsunami near Japan, for example, then an earthquake immediately occurred on the opposite side of the ocean, i.e. near Chile, and it generated a major tsunami as well. What would happen when those waves met in the middle?
