How did the Christian Eastern Roman Empire in say, 643CE, reconcile the fact that while pagan, the empire was dominant across the Mediterranean, but now as a Christian empire it was a shadow of its former self? Was there ever any consideration of abandoning Christianity?

Current rankings of the "best" Roman emperors are typical, viewing their reigns as pinnacles for Rome. Looking back to Republican era times, were there Consuls who am average Roman citizen would look back on and say "that was our greatest Consul" and long for a return to those days?
