The two Ancient Greek cities we know the most about are Athens and Sparta. We think of Sparta as the 'weird' society for being so militaristic, but do we know if Athens was actually what most Greeks would consider "normal"?

I've read that Alexander the Great thought of being Macedonian as being a type of Greek, and historians today argue back and forth about it - but did the other Greeks (ie. Athens, Sparta, etc.) in his day think of him as Greek too?
