I'm just reading about the Bosphorus and the Dardanelles. What a fascinating area. Can you guys give me some interesting tidbits about the Turkish Straits?

I'm watching The Thin Red Line, which is about the Battle of Guadalcanal (one of many bloody battles fought to gain control of islands held by the Japanese). Could the US Navy have simply blockaded those islands and effectively lay siege to them until the Japanese ran out of supplies?
