If the brain evolved in vertebrates as a part of the spinal cord, why do brains exist in animals without spinal cords, such as insects and other arthropods? Is this an example of convergent evolution, and how different really are vertebrate brains from invertebrate brains?

I’ve heard of freak accidents where flocks of birds have been struck by lightning. Why doesn’t this happen more often, considering that flocks of birds are often high up and have a large surface area?

When I swim in water for an extended time, I feel very hydrated and really need to pee, but others around me don’t report the same thing. This happens even when I haven’t had anything to drink for quite a while. Do people absorb water at varying rates just by soaking in it?
