When you turn on a light is it streaming protons in every conceivable direction? Can we calculate how many protons? How often are they emitted?

Is there any evidence as to why certain species have certain numbers of chromosomes? Why have 10 instead of 36? or 40 instead of 124? Is there some evolutionary advantage to having more or less chromosomes?
