If studies that are not successful in proving their hypothesis are generally not published, then how do we know what didn't work out. In other words, why don't scientists make the same mistakes over and over?

Would we see differently if our eyes weren't filled with liquid? Likewise, if we were to invent a camera lens that was filled with liquid, how would that change image quality.
