If I try to heat a bottle full of water it doesn't burn, but it only leaves a black powder in the points where I put the lighter. Why does it happen, and what is that black powder?

Last night a major earthquake occured in Italy, which woke up my family except me. Funny enough, I dreamt of an earthquake which shaked my guitar and produced sounds. Is this really possible?
