The documentary I am watching claimed that one of the more appealing aspects of early Christianity in ancient Rome was their significantly reduced rates of infant mortality. What evidence of this exists?

When Cincinnatus was named co-consul, it was because one of the former consuls died and the living one could name whoever he wanted as the new one. It seems like there would be more (literal) backstabbing between the co-consuls, in order to name a puppet and solidify power. Why is this not the case?
