We know on D-Day that paratroopers landed in the dark and the landing forces hit the beaches in the early morning - what time did everyone have to wake up to coordinate such massive movements? Did they get any sleep at all beforehand?

In the series “The Pacific” John Basilone wins the MoH in 1942 but is killed on Iwo Jima in 1945 after volunteering to return to combat. Did this organically happen to any Americans in the Pacific Theater? How did troop rotations work? Was it possible to be in battles three or four years apart?
