I recently found out that Muslim Spain recruited soldiers almost entirely from sub-Saharan African populations. The same was true for medieval caliphates in North Africa and parts of the Middle East. What was it about sub-Saharan African soldiers that made them the ideal recruits for Muslim rulers?

In the rather difficult to watch 1992 film "The Chekist," we see the Cheka stripping people naked, shooting them en masse and then filling trucks with their naked dead bodies. Does this accurately reflect the kind of brutality and violence that took place during Lenin's rule over the Soviet Union?

I'm a sub-Saharan African Muslim convert living somewhere in Spain or the Middle East during the Middle Ages. Would my fellow Muslims have accepted me as a brother or sister in accordance with Islam's teachings on egalitarianism or would I have been a victim of racial and/or ethnic discrimination?
