We know that the Norse formed settlements in what is now Newfoundland circa 1050. Why didn't these settlements last very long? In other words, why didn't people of Norse descent permanently move there?

I've heard reports that the Mongol Army ate the flesh of their enemies to intimidate their foes. Did this really happen or does it originate as anti-Mongol Empire propaganda?
