Thanks to James Bond and le Carré, British secret intelligence looms large in the cultural consciousness of the Cold War. But how significant was it in reality? How would its capacity stack up agianst the espionage services of France or West Germany? What about Italy or Sweden?

When I was 8 or 9 I heard a description of Jews under the Nazis being forced to "clean the sidewalk with their tongues" and it stuck with me. Was this common? Is there more information on this kind of abuse?

How realistic are the descriptions of troop numbers presented in the Old Testament history books like Judges, Samuel, and Kings? Could peoples living in that area around that time really have raised an army of ten thousand men?
