What are some historical trends/events that historical materialism cannot explain or do not make sense from a marxist lense?

Do you, as a historian, believe there is a common thread, a driving force in history? Say, the theory of historical materialism or the inevitable progress towards liberal democracy? Or is there no true narrative to history, no driving force other than the actions of individuals? Thoughts?
