Medieval kings are often depicted as spoiled, entitled, inept, or despotic in modern TV shows and movies, rather than noble, generous, and chivalrous, as the stories of old often depicted them. Is this modern take closer to the mark of historical reality? How "good" or "bad" were they?

The Roman Emperor Heraclius gets a lot of credit for his bold and successful counterattack through Armenia and into Sasanian Persia in 622. But he brought a lot of Turks with him. How important were the Turks — who would later shatter the Byzantine state — in Heraclius's victory over the Persians?
