(Repost from April 1) In his book Midnight Rising, author Tony Horowitz strongly implies that the Virginia Military Institute was founded (at least in part) to support the popular new trend of paramilitary groups aimed at suppressing slave revolts in the post-Nat Turner era. Is this at all true?
