In 400 AD Rome hosted a population of well over a million people, 200 years later the population of the city was counted in low tens of thousands. So, was there just a gigantic empty ghost town located in the center of Italy? What happened to all that infrastructure?

If I asked an average person in the 15th century Ming China who they identify as, would they identify as a Chinese person living in China, or would they rather consider themselves a member of a local ethnic group living under some local lord, without any connection to China as a whole?
