I found this really interesting quote about the black death while doing some research, and would like some context/help understanding it (can't fit it in the title)

According to my history textbook "the black plague was the first major plague outbreak in Europe after a long period of relatively few large disease outbreaks, and reversed social development in large parts of Europe". How accurate is this, and what kind of developments were reversed?

Was there a political motivation behind the conflict regarding religious imagery around the time of the second council of Nicea? Or was the source of conflict solely thological?
