What is the historical origin of accounting? I have read online that it comes from pre-renaissance Italy - but is there an event that caused it to be needed? Or is there a text, such as a philosophical text or political treatise, that called for it to be needed?

I recently read that John Adams and Thomas Jefferson took a tour of the English countryside during their diplomatic mission to England in the 1780s. Is there a lot reported about what they saw, who they met, what they discussed? It seems like a fascinating place to be for them.
