How familiar were individuals in the court advising the Byzantine Emperor over time on the history of Byzantium? Also, how familiar was the emperor and his advisors based on the empire? We have satellite images of countries now. So, they likely saw their territory differently, right?

I was listening to a 1960 interview on BBC radio recording with a novelist - the interviewer said that in the past 20 years, there had been massive taxation in the UK and many lost their wealth. How true is this? Did WWII and its aftermath lead to a massive level of taxation of the wealth in the UK?
