Did the inhuman vocals of black metal and death metal have any early-80's or pre-80's antecedents? Were they originally an attempt at incorporating the voices of horror-film demons into music? Also, where does Cromagnon's "Caledonia" (1969) fit into the history of such vocals?

How did non-automobile transport between the enclave of West Berlin and the rest of West Germany work? Was it all by plane, or were there trains too? And how hard was it to get permits to drive through E. Germany from W. Berlin to the rest of W. Germany and vice versa?

Louisiana kept a great deal of the French civil law that was in force before its admission into the United States. Why didn't California or Texas similarly keep Mexican civil law around?

During the earliest car accidents, were there problems that were specifically due to having to rely on traffic laws enacted with only horses and carriages in mind? Also, how quickly were such outdated laws updated?

I've heard it said (by a history professor no less) that FDR personally wasn't very progressive, but that he pushed the New Deal due to concerns that a revolution could break out. Did the US in the 1930s truly seem to be on the path to revolution? And is that an accurate statement of FDR's views?

At what point did Americans consciously think of Democrats as left of the GOP and vice versa? For example, was Kennedy described as left of Nixon during the 1960 election, and was Nixon seen as more conservative?
