Was the use of dental braces for purely cosmetic ends ever stigmatized the way that rhinoplasties, hair transplants, and other aesthetic procedures have been in more recent history? E.g., could rumors that Hollywood stars only had perfect teeth due to braces have been in old-time gossip columns?
