How long did it take to get news from the west to east coast of the US before the telegraph? I'm curious to learn more about how long it took for news and information to travel across the country and how that changed over time, can anyone recommend a book or any material on that subject?

During WW2 I would assume at least some diplomats from countries were in Germany when Germany invaded their nations, what did the Germans do with the diplomats? Did other countries simply expel diplomats when the war broke out, were any imprisoned?
