[WP] A human body can only live around 80 years, but a human soul can live for around three hundred years. Immortality was invented, and after 300 years a new disease started appearing among the immortals which made their bodies fall like puppets with their strings cut.

[WP] Most races in the galaxy have FTL but it is "gate" based requiring both ends to work, but when this is the case, they send detailed blueprints on probes on distant systems. One of these probes arrived at Earth and instead of constructing one, they invented FTL-drives for each ship.
