Is it safe to cut off molded part of food (slice of bread, cheese, etc) and eat the rest?

What's the longest a "germ" (bacteria, virus, fungi, parasite) can live on a barren shelf or counter top? If left alone for long enough, could such area be considered sterile?

Our core body temp is roughly 98.6F (37C), why do we feel so hot and uncomfortable when the environment temp is 85-90F+ (25-32C+)? Why are we so much more comfortable with environment temp 20F (10C) degrees lower than our core temp?
