I've read that cuneiform is the earliest known form of writing, so how did we decipher what cuneiform markings mean? Was there some sort of equivalent of a Rosetta Stone, or was there some other method that was used?

In Outlander season 1, the Duke of Sandringham has a duel in which they appear to fire blanks at each other. Was this how duelling was actually done? What was the point if they ultimately just apologize? How did duelling actually work?
