If we found a fossil of a midget, or an extremely tall person, could they be mistaken for different species?

I can understand how parallax helps us figure out the distance of the planets in our solar system, but there is no parallax when viewing more distant objects. How do we know something is billions of light years away when all we are seeing is a dot of light?
