What does Geometric Unity attempt to solve, and do you think it's working to move the conversation forward in a better direction?

While reading about the unexpected data from the LHC I read this: "While protons at normal energy levels consist of three quarks, they tend to gain an accompanying cluster of gluons at higher energy levels." How does energy increase mass like this, or am I not understanding something?
