Were there Jewish or Muslim pioneers? Did they form wagon trains of their own or keep their heads down and travel with whoever they could? How did they handle having a different sabbath/special dietary restrictions/(in the case of Muslims)having to stop to pray a few times a day while on the trail?

I've seen plenty of snare drums, pipes, and trumpets in depictions of premodern battlefields. Did the other typical marching band instruments also see use for signaling on the battlefield? If not, how did they become part of the ensemble?
