700 Jewish prisoners launch an uprising at Treblinka, one of the most notorious concentration camps in 1943. Lasting for 30 minutes, they set several buildings ablaze, exploded a petrol tank, while one group attacked the main gate. Around 200 managed to escape.

US Air Force bombers raid 9 oil refineries in Ploesti, Romania in 1944 as part of Operation Tidal Wave, to deny fuel to the Axis forces. The raid however ended in a failure for the Allies, with 53 aircraft shot down, referred to later as Black Sunday.

Anne Frank and her family are arrested by the Gestapo in Amsterdam from a sealed off warehouse where they were hiding on this date in 1944, following the tip off from a Dutch informer. She would die later at the Bergen Belsen concentration camp where she was deported to.

The Patrol Torpedo Boat PT-109, is rammed and sunk by a Japanese destroyer Amagiri in 1942. The boat's commander Lt. John F Kennedy, future US President, manages to save all but 2 of his 13 crew, as he leads them to safety.
