My surname would have gone extinct ~100 years after it’s creation, but a husband chose to carry the surname of his wife… Why?

I found my first ancestor with my surname is from the late 13th/early 14th century, how much would I be able to relate with my great (times a lot) grandfather? We are both from The Netherlands (if that existed independently back then), him and I only live about 70km away from each other.
