How was the iconic symbol of a trophy 🏆 developed? It seems like such an odd shape and fixture to use to resemble achievement or present as an award. How did it all start and how has it changed over time?

Netflix's show, The Queen's Gambit, takes place in the 1960s. Towards the end of the show it is portrayed that Russia has a great involvement in the chess community to prove its intelligence(actual mental/brain intelligence) over the U.S. How accurate is this?
