The New Horizons probe used a MIPS R3000 CPU that was first introduced in the late 80's and was the same one used in the PlayStation 1. The new Orion spacecraft is controlled by an IBM processor made in 2002. Why are NASA using such outdated hardware instead of smaller and more efficient processors?
