In "Band of Brothers", Holland is described as being occupied by German soldiers who were old men and kids (this is apparently the Allied belief before Operation Market Garden). Why didn't Allies simply invade Holland and take Germany that way?

To what degree has humans' ability to think changed? For example, Pharaoh Merneptah's scribes recorded that Israel's "seed is not" after a victory. This is very rudimentary- did it reflect a limited ability to think or a limited ability to write?
