I am pro-vaccine, but I am skeptical of the Covid-19 vaccine effort. How can I be sure the vaccine will reduce deaths?

If I was a hypothetical object able to freely drop into/through the earth, at what point do I begin to slow down instead of speed up i.e. I will have an acceleration of 9.8 m/s2 speeding me up but I presume at the very center gravity accln is zero, so at what point does the braking happen?
