How did US slave traders react when it became apparent that slavery would be abolished and the people they "bought" (viewing the people as merchandise) would no longer be theirs to "sell" (because of no longer being considered merchandise)? How did they try to mitigate their losses?

My roommate, who is a historian (has a bachelor's degree in history), says the Confederate States were briefly recognized as a country by Britain, France and Spain, but I cannot find any sources on it online. Is he right?

How was the US slave market shortly before the emancipation went through? Did slaves go on clearance? Did people feel scammed because they paid for slaves a day or so before losing them?
