Is it possible that the Krakken and other similar mythological creatures actually did exist and we can’t say definitively because the fossilization of octopi and the sort is incredibly rare already?

Deep ocean creatures often have white ‘pupils.’ Or, at least, that’s what I’ve noticed. Are they blind or can see exceptionally well in the dark? And if they’re blind, what evolutionary excuse do they have for eyes at all?
