It is a well-known fact that during the Vietnam War, the US supplied South Vietnam and the Soviet Union supplied North Vietnam. Did a Soviet soldier/aircraft ever directly come in contact with an American soldier/aircraft?

The famous song “The British Grenadier” has lyrics that go: “some talk of Alexander, and some of Hercules; of Hector and Lysander...” Would the common British conscript in the 18th century have known about these figures, or would they just be names to him?
