Georgism seems like an incredibly important (and persuasive) reform movement in the late-19th century. What happened to it?

Not of the Great Triumvirate (Webster, Clay, Calhoun) were Solid Democrats (Calhoun wasn't really solidly either side). How were they able to dominate the Senate so? What was the usual Democrat/Whig Divide?
