Both Ice & Water weigh the same, with the only thing changing being volume. I.e. Density = M/V. However, if a powerline is covered in ice, and it starts melting, would the ice/water phase increase the strain on the line temporarily as volume becomes reduced with the same mass?

In washing dishes, why does hot water clean messy surfaces better than cold water? I understand that thermal energy can break bonds and excite atoms, but don't the atoms of left over food have to reach their boiling points first?
