After the Civil War, the South re-invented the Confederate cause to be about states' right and downplayed slavery and its inherent cruelties. When blacks were subjected under segregation in the New South, how did whites att argue about the legacy of slavery - as a sin, or as a blessing taken away?

Reading Golden Age comics I find a lot of stories involving vigilantes taking on the mobsters. During this era, was it perceived that the the justice system was inadequate? Or is this more just fantasy solutions to rising crimes? (Or just an older literary trope I am not aware of)
