What was the common mental health/general mentality like for Americans during the Great Depression and World War 2? Was the “can do” and “united” spirit associated with the latter really common, or were people as anxious, hopeless, depressed, angry and pessimistic as one could expect?

Has there been a situation where a country/empire has reversed its decline rather than end in violence or otherwise (like the Roman Empire)? How has it been done? Or is continuing decline inevitable?
