In fantasy media, merchants are often portrayed as traveling damsels for the hero to rescue, so I'm curious how did they actually secure themselves while traveling? And how far would they actually travel in their lifetimes? And when they arrived at a place how did sleep?

How should I imagine WW2 combat? I have a general idea of what combat in WW1 was like, at least in France with combatinants on opposite sides of a field entretnched in a large trench. However, in WW2 I'm a lot more confused about what I should imagine.
