I'm glad Graff cleared this up. You don't have to like his or Pontac's writing, but it's important to acknowledge that they were simply working with the material SEGA and Sonic Team gave them. The "meta era" was a choice they made.

Since the game takes place from Shadow's POV, I like to think that Sonic's more hyperactive personality is just how Shadow always sees him. Aliens are ransacking the Earth and Sonic just treats it like any other adventure
