The Byzantines had access to their ancient past, unlike most of their contemporaries. So, did they ever bring back something "ancient" (battle tactics, weapons, architecture, art etc.) in the medieval era?

So I just came across a claim that "muslim invaders" slashed the arms and heads of many sculptures in northern India. Is it true? How much devastation did Northern India (and its art/architecture etc) really suffer during the turkic/muslim invasions ?

At the beginning of the 7th century, most of the Mediterranean was still under Roman control. By the middle of the 8th century though, only Anatolia and few other outposts remained. How did the remaining Byzantines reflect on the "de-romanization" process that took place in former Roman lands?

In today's world, if a large part of a country is occupied by invaders, chaos ensues. Armed rebellion breaks out, ultra nationalistic leaders rise to power, hate spreads. The Romans lost half of their territory in many points of their history. Did something similar ever happen in their society?

Were there ever any nationalistic Byzantine Leader who promised to the people to "Make Romania Great Again" and to bring back the old glory days? If yes, what are some interesting instances of it?
