I've always read about war horses being "man-killers" and recently read about a 17th century war horse disembowling a groom. Were horses really that dangerous?

After seeing an example of a Roman latrine I have to ask: Were ancient people really completely comfortable just defecating and urinating in front of each Other? Do we know of any instances of embarrassment or shame or humor about this situation being brought up?

I keep reading about the large amounts of alcohol that sailors drank during the age of sail. Did this just result in hundreds of alcoholics serving in the Navy? Or was this just normal for the time period?
