Is there a history of happiness? That is, historians who investigate which societies were happiest, the ways the textual record could reflect this, and parallels between different societies and our modern world?

Until the German invasion in May 1940, Belgium and the Netherlands pursued a policy of strict neutrality which prevented them working on defence planning with the French. Were there forces inside these countries who pushed for a more proactive engagement with the Allies?

I've read in several places that after the fall of France in 1940, the Vichy government's show trial of the Third Republic's leadership at Riom was an embarrassment and had to be called off due to a solid defence by the defendants. What was so brilliant about the defence that led to this result?
