If birds like Confuciusornis lived along side the dinosaurs, why then are the dinosaurs now believed to have evolved into modern avian species rather than simply to have gone extinct while the bird(like) species existing at the time survived and are the more likely source of the common descent?

It is understandable why extreme heat or a hot object would damage organic matter due to an increase of thermodynamic activity and the energy produced. Why on the other hand would extreme cold or the reduced thermodynamic state and corresponding lack of energy cause damage to organic matter?
