How did they go to the bathroom during blizzards in Little House on the Prairie?

I have always been fascinated with Little House on the Prairie. One thing I can't figure out is how they went to the bathroom during those 3-day blizzards. Pa used to have to tie a rope from the stable to the house so he wouldn't get lost because it would be a complete whiteout so no outhouse...
