In Bernard Cornwell's book "Sharpe's Siege", he describes the War of 1812 as "a quite pointless conflict between Britain and America", stating that "The causes of the conflict had been resolved before war was declared". How accurate is this statement?

I read in a novel of a Spanish army stopping their march for a siesta during the Peninsular War. Did this ever actually happen? If so, was there any impact on any battles, such as the army not arriving on time?
